The Bahamas consist of more than 700 islands, though less than half are inhabited. This is their capital, on the island of New Providence. Originally named Charles Towne, Nassau was briefly known before 1718 as “the Pirate Republic.” It historically served as a haven for pirates, Loyalists in the Revolutionary War, and rum-runners during Prohibition.
